Event Details

We're very pleased to welcome Simon Roberts, one of the UK's most highly praised and respected photographers, for an evening talk and a daytime masterclass in Manchester.

Having worked extensively in Russia and England to produce the books Motherland and We English, he was commissioned by the UK parliament to be official election artist of 2010, resulting in The Election Project, a newspaper and touring exhibition with accompanying contributed images from members of the public.

The tickets on this page are for the evening talk only. If you book for the masterclass event on 28 September, then a ticket for the talk is included.

"While many of Roberts' images adhere to our traditional notions of beauty spots, others are of noisy, packed events like Derby Day. In each, however, the framing is such that the subjects are fixed firmly within their environment. Individuals are rendered small but, significantly, we can still read them by their expressions, their clothes and what they're doing. It's a technique that links back to landscape painting and the layered canvases of the 16th century. As a contemporary record, however, Roberts has captured a nation beautifully and brilliantly."

Creative Review, The Photography Annual

"Simon Roberts's passion for photography is like a seam running through his life; a constant presence, which has resurfaced time and time again, via magical moments and turning points."

Miranda Gavin, Hotshoe

"It is rare to see work today that engages us so absolutely, and without judgement, without resorting to sentimentality."

Greg Hobson, National Media Museum
